Tanzania is days away from switching on one of its most important grid upgrades in years. The 400kV Chalinze to Dodoma transmission line, a 345 km link valued at about TZS 514 billion, has reached 94 percent completion and is scheduled for commissioning on 21 August 2026.
The new line is built to move far more power across the country. It will allow TANESCO to evacuate the full 2,115 MW generated by the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant, up from a current transmission capacity of roughly 850 MW. In practice that means more reliable supply for homes, industry and commercial users across the central corridor and beyond.
